Background
Year Founded: 2006
Mission & Mandate: Since its inception in 2006, the principal mission of the Chantier de l’économie sociale Trust has been to foster the expansion and development of collective enterprises by increasing their access to financing and enhancing the capitalization of social economy enterprises. Patient capital provides financial leverage for start-up, expansion, and consolidation, as well as construction or renovation of real estate assets, in concert with other available sources of financing. Our financial products are available to collective enterprises in every region of Québec.
Description: The Chantier de l’économie sociale Trust pursues its mission by creating innovative patient capital financial products and encouraging the involvement of private and public sector partners.
The establishment of the Fonds d’aide à la rénovation de l’habitation communautaire (FondsARHC) [Fund to assist community housing renovations] is an example of a new investment product, created in collaboration with local stakeholders and new financial partners, in response to a development need of this sector of the social economy.
Founded in 2018, the Chantier Trust also launched the Fonds d’investissement pour logement étudiant (FILE), a new financial product offered to eligible student housing co-operatives and non-profit organizations to finance construction of new student housing.

Success Story
École Entreprise Formétal
Montreal, QC
In 1990, the integration enterprise known as École Entreprise Formétal commenced operations in Point St. Charles, a working-class neighbourhood that was the centre of Canada’s industrial development during the 1930s. The goal: address mounting unemployment and keep young people in school. The main mission of the École entreprise Formétal is to give young people an experience of social and occupational integration while allowing them to acquire job skills and develop their knowledge, skills, and aptitudes. The aim is to help them establish themselves in the community and in the labour market through training and actual job experience.
The Trust’s investment was used to rent new commercial space in South-West Montréal and replace outdated machinery.
