Salish Soils

Salish Soils is an Indigenous-owned social venture, a compost-building facility in a rural area. On land that was formerly the site of an aggregate mine, which left the land degraded beyond repair, Salish Soils is building compost from a variety of sources, including the regional food scraps collection program, residential backyard waste, regional fish farm, construction and forestry waste. Instead of all of this going either into the landfill, being burnt or otherwise discarded to the detriment of the environment, Salish is creating a high quality, value-added product, much sought-after by landscapers, gardeners, farmers and local governments throughout the region. The social venture also helps to address, in concrete ways and at a local level, challenges including unemployment, homelessness, food security, gender and racial justice, mental health and wellness, poverty reduction, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, resilient, climate-conscious economic development, COVID/recession recovery and more.
